Samaras eager for new Celtic deal

Celtic striker Georgios Samaras says he is keen to sign a new contract with the Scottish champions.

Samaras, 28, has been at Parkhead for five years and is now the longest-serving player at the club after captain Scott Brown.

Despite speculation regarding the future of a number of Celtic players, the Greece international is desperate to extend his current deal, which expires next summer.

"I have one more year of my contract and hopefully I will be here next season," he said in the Metro. "Six years is a lot but it has gone by so fast and when you feel good at the club, people are looking after you and you feel you are part of a big family, I cannot see a reason to leave. But it is too soon to speak about a contract. When they are ready and I am ready then we will have a chat."

Celtic will be presented with the Scottish Premier League trophy after their clash with St Johnstone on Saturday, before Neil Lennon's men turn their attention to the Scottish Cup final against Hibs on May 26.

"It is a great day for everyone, for all the hard work we have put in all season," Samaras said. "There is no pressure, just a celebration. I know in the last couple of games we didn't have the best results but, to be honest, we are focused for the cup final. Everybody is looking forward to that. I have been six years at the club and I haven't done the double, and I think now is the perfect timing."

Samaras has hit 12 goals for Celtic this season, and was recently voted player of the year by the club's supporters.
