Dortmund 'target quartet of signings'

Borussia Dortmund are set to sign at least four new players but might not buy a direct replacement for the departing Mario Gotze, according to reports in Germany.

The Champions League finalists will lose Germany international Gotze, 20, to Bayern Munich in the summer, and it is thought he may not be the only big name on his way out of the Westfalenstadion.

Sought-after Poland international Robert Lewandowski is also being linked with Bayern - Dortmund’s Champions League final opponents – while defender Felipe Santana, whose stoppage-time goal against Malaga secured a semi-final place, is likely to join local rivals Schalke.

Meanwhile, the future of youngsters including Moritz Leitner is also up in the air.

On Friday, Dortmund correspondent Thomas Hennecke reported in kicker that at least four new faces would be coming in.

The club have recently been linked with Ajax’s Denmark international midfielder Christian Eriksen, 21, who has indicated that he would be interested in the move and described Dortmund as “a great club”.

Dortmund general manager Michael Zorc told the paper: “Eriksen is a very good player - no doubt about that.”

But a replacement for Gotze could already be at the club in the shape of Germany international Ilkay Gundogan, who may be asked to play a more attacking midfield role.

“I don’t feel uncomfortable further up front,” the 22-year old explained. “I played that position during my youth days.”

Gundogan will have a chance to prove his qualities in a more advanced role in the last two games of the Bundesliga season as he deputises for the injured Gotze, who is hoping to return for the Champions League final against his future employers.
