Jeremy Mathieu believes Barcelona are a “fantastic club” but says he is focused on playing for Valencia at the moment.
Mathieu, 28, has been mentioned in the Catalan press as a potential transfer target for Barca in the summer, with Eric Abidal thought to be leaving the Camp Nou and Adriano Correia’s contract talks currently deadlocked.
The France international is most comfortable at left-back, but has also often featured on the left wing, and filled in impressively at centre-back in recent weeks due to injuries at the Mestalla.
His current contract with Los Che contains an €8 million release clause and runs up until June 2014, but he is one of many players believed to be available for a transfer given the club’s well-publicised financial problems.
"Barcelona is Barcelona,” Mathieu told Onda Cero Valencia. “If you ask any player from here, or from Barcelona, they would say it is a fantastic club. [But] my head is clear: Valencia.”
Mundo Deportivo reported this week that negotiations between Barca and Adriano’s representatives had broken down, as the club were unwilling to agree to the three-year extension until 2017 sought by the player. The Brazil international has previously been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.
Abidal is out of contract next month, and his agent has spoken recently about his frustration at the time it is taking the blaugrana club to offer his client a new deal.
