Nacional eliminated by Garcilaso

Peruvian side Real Garcilaso caused a major Copa Libertadores shock as they eliminated Nacional on penalties at the last-16 stage.

After winning 1-0 the first leg, they lost by the same scoreline in Uruguay thanks to Gonzalo Bueno's header, but prevailed 4-1 on penalties.

Playing at home and needing to win, Nacional tried to control the match from the off, but they struggled to create chances thanks in part to the solidity of Garcilaso's midfield.

The hosts missed injured striker Ivan Alonso, with none of the three forwards selected by coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena in his absence impressing.

Israel Damonte had the first chance he could not beat the keeper, then Carlos de Pena fired wide from outside the box.

After the break, Bueno put the Uruguayans ahead with a header, and shortly after two veterans jumped off the bench looking to clinch qualification: former Inter midfielder Alvaro Recoba and former Deportivo La Coruna striker Sebastian Abreu.

But they could not provide the spark Nacional needed - although Recoba's fine free-kick in the closing minutes was close to clinching it.

It was Recoba himself who shot over the crossbar with the first penalty kick, then Diego Arismendi did the same.

Garcilaso's players converted each of theirs, sealing the Peruvians' qualification to quarter-finals.
