Downing keen to stay put at Anfield

Stewart Downing has said he wants to stay at Liverpool and believes things are looking up for the club under the management of Brendan Rodgers.

The winger, signed last season by previous Anfield manager Kenny Dalglish, found his chances limited in the first half of this campaign and had appeared set to leave.

But injuries opened the way for him to stake his claim for a place in the team, and he told BBC Radio Merseyside: "That's football for you.

"Me and the manager have always had open conversations, and I found it difficult at the start of the season because I didn't play - it wasn't that I wasn't playing well.

"Once I got in the team and had a run of games, my form picked up and I think the team got better and better. We've had some good results, especially after Christmas."

He said that although it was up to Rodgers whether or not he remained a Liverpool player beyond the summer, he wanted to stay and be part of what he predicted would be a successful campaign next season.

"If we keep this team together - and I am sure the manager will strengthen - then we can have right good go, and that will be the big test," he added.
