Stramaccioni rues season of bad luck

A missed penalty in Inter Milan's 3-1 defeat to Lazio has summed up the club's season according to manager Andrea Stramaccioni.

• Blog: Moratti faces tough questions after Inter loss

Inter attacker Ricky Alvarez was the unfortunate player to be caught in the spotlight, slipping at the crucial moment and skying his shot over the bar.

The defeat leaves Inter without a hope of claiming a spot in Europe next season and forced fans to show their displeasure with the team's current plight.

And after the game, Stramaccioni declared that Alvarez's slip was the type of rotten luck his side had suffered all season.

"We lost another player to injury and the penalty of Alvarez sums up our season, we would have levelled the game if that went in," he told Sky Sport Italia after Samir Handanovic's own goal and strikes to Hernanes and Ogenyi Onazi gave Lazio a crucial away victory.

"Commenting on an encounter like this is not easy, we lost 3-1 in a match that we deserved at least a draw.

"We hit the woodwork and then Ogenyi Onazi scored a stunning goal.

"Even in our current condition, we tried to play the game and take the initiative right to the end. I saw an improvement in terms of performance."

But Alvarez's misfortune was not the only embarrassing moment Inter had to endure, with a comical mix-up between goalkeeper Handanovic and the home defence allowing the ball the roll into the back of the net.

However, Stramaccioni refused to lay blame at the feet of any of his players, believing the calamity of errors was just a chain of events that just "can happen".

"Alvarez had a good game, it happens even to the great players slipping on the spot," he continued.

"The error from Handanovic is not something I will even talk about it, he is a great goalkeeper and it can happen."

And with next season the first time in 15 years since Inter have not graced European competition, Stramaccioni admitted the fans had every right to vent their frustration at the club.

"The banners of the fans? Their civil protest is legitimate, they have the right to express their dissent," he said.
