Johnson: Stoke draw raises confidence

Adam Johnson has commended Sunderland's battling qualities after a 1-1 draw against Stoke City on Monday night.

• Randall: Sunderland test nerves

The Black Cats edged closer to Premier League safety thanks to the point and Johnson says the way they fought back to draw, even with ten men, has given them confidence in their battle against relegation.

"We said at half time if we can come away with a point it'll be a great result," he told SAFC TV. "It was like a win in the end. A massive point for us and it has given everyone a lift. To be honest I thought we were the better team even with ten men.

"It's always nice to get a standing ovation because when you've played well it makes you feel good, and I'm just delighted that we've come back and got a point under difficult circumstances. It was difficult going down to ten men but everyone worked so hard and it paid off in the end; we got our rewards for all our hard work. I can't really remember what happened [for the goal]; it happened quickly but it was the instinctive finish of a striker - it was a massive goal for us."

Next up for Sunderland in the Premier League is the visit of Southampton on Sunday. Still far from safe themselves, Johnson believes the side have laid down the foundations to achieve success against the Saints.

"It's a big game on Sunday," he said. "Obviously if we can play like that with ten men, we've got an extra man for the game on Sunday so we will go into that full of confidence. We knew after our last result that we needed to prove to people that we are a good team. We're delighted with a point and we could probably have even nicked it. I don't know how long it was with ten men, but it felt like a long time."
