Martinez eyes landmark win

Roberto Martinez hopes to bring up a landmark in style by beating Swansea so he can celebrate his 150th Premier League game in charge of Wigan Athletic.

• Blog: Nerves will be jangling

The FA Cup finalists will go to Wembley outside the relegation zone if they can defeat Martinez's former club at the DW Stadium on Tuesday night.

And Martinez, who replaced Steve Bruce at the Latics in 2009, believes it is remarkable he has lasted so long in the job.

"It's an incredible number," he said. "One hundred and fifty games in the Barclays Premier League at Wigan, well, there are not many managers who have done it. Put it that way.

"It's an incredible thing at 39 to have that honour and privilege. It's something to be very satisfied about."

If Wigan, who won 3-2 at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, do win, then they will leapfrog Newcastle and Norwich and condemn the north-east club to a place in the bottom three with two games of the season remaining.

That would put Martinez, who is aiming to keep Wigan up for a fourth-successive season, on course to beat the drop yet again.

He added: "But football is not about managers or landmarks, it's about reaching our aims in the league. And if we could get a win in that 150th game in the Barclays Premier League that would be the best celebration yet."
