Higdon: Arrest blown out of proportion

Motherwell striker Michael Higdon felt he let himself down after being arrested for alleged assault on the same night he was named PFA Scotland Player of the Year but insisted the incident had been "blown out of proportion".

• Higdon, Johnston win awards

Higdon, 29, was handed the award after scoring 26 league goals for Motherwell and he maintains that the evening represents a career high, despite the alleged altercation with security staff at a Glasgow nightclub only a couple of hours later.

"Honestly, it's still the best night I've had as a footballer," he said. "It's a career high and that's all I'm thinking about, rather than any negatives. I hope other people see it like that too. These things happen in every walk of life.

"I've had a great season and that's what I hope people remember. Things have been blown out of proportion. There was nothing in it, really."

He added: "What happened later, that was just a misunderstanding. One of these things that sometimes happens. But it doesn't take away any of my elation. I wish things hadn't happened in the way they did."

The player, who described his emotions as "up and down", said he was less than familiar with the city nightlife and that had contributed to his predicament.

"I'm annoyed at myself for getting myself into a situation like that because it's not me," Higdon told the media. "I'm not the type of lad who goes out clubbing or to bars. I'm a country pub type of guy. That's the only disappointing aspect of it because I think this was avoidable. I should have known better than getting myself into that kind of situation."
