Liverpool book Cape Town friendly

Liverpool will make their first visit to South Africa in nearly 20 years for a post-season friendly later this month.

Brendan Rodgers side will face Ajax Cape Town on May 21, two days after the Premier League season finishes.

The club last visited South Africa in May 1994, when they faced Aston Villa, Cape Town Spurs and Kaizer Chiefs in the United Bank International Soccer Festival. During that trip, the squad met Nelson Mandela, then the president of South Africa.

Billy Hogan, Liverpool's chief commercial officer, said: "It will be fantastic for the club to return to South Africa after almost 20 years.

"This visit is part of our off-season activity and shows our commitment to bringing the club closer to our fans all over the globe, no matter how far away from Anfield they may live."

Liverpool have already planned a pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia. They will face an Indonesia XI in Jakarta on July 20, before facing Australian A-League side Melbourne Victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground four days later. They will then take on Thailand in Bangkok on July 28.
