Germany's US trip 'will be a farce'

The all-German Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich at Wembley on May 25 could turn the German national team's US trip later that month into "a farce", German football magazine kicker has warned.

Up to 17 Germany internationals are set to miss the trip, which sees Germany take on Ecuador in Boca Raton on May 29 and the US national team - coached by ex-Germany boss Jurgen Klinsmann - in Washington on June 2.

With the German Cup final between Bayern and Stutgart taking place on June 1, which is also the last match day in La Liga, and Lazio's Miroslav Klose playing in the Italian Cup on May 26, coach Joachim Low will be without up to eight players from Bayern, six from Dortmund, two from Real Madrid and one from Lazio.

Only Arsenal's Per Merteacker will be left of the team that started Germany's recent World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan.

"The trip to the States is in danger of becoming a farce - the more so as it is not even good as a test for young talents, as they will be playing at the Under-21 European Championships in Israel," kicker said.

The Under-21 European Championship means youngsters such as Spurs midfielder Lewis Holtby, Borussia Monchengladbach attacker Patrick Herrmann and Eintracht Frankfurt's Sebastian Jung and Sebastian Rhode will not be included in the squad for the US trip.

German Football Association (DFB) general secretary Helmut Sandrock defended the tour, which was organised in 2011.

"Nobody could have seen a German Champions League final coming at that time," Sandrock said, stressing that there was no possibility of the tour being cancelled and saying the DFB would "adhere to its commitment".
