Klinsmann: Stoke move bad for Shea

Brek Shea has been warned that his lack of first-team action at Stoke City is damaging his international chances with the USA by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

Klinsmann is trying to guide his team to the 2014 World Cup finals in Rio and Shea hopes to be a part of the squad if they make it, but the winger has struggled to make an impact at the Britannia Stadium since his move from FC Dallas in January.

Klinsmann was vocal at the time of the deal, suggesting Shea should remain in the US and is clearly frustrated by Shea being left on the sidelines by Stoke boss Tony Pulis. He feels the 23-year-old will struggle to add to his 15 international caps, unless he breaks through and becomes a Premier League regular.

USA have friendlies against Belgium and Germany at the end of May and start of June and Shea is unlikely to be involved unless he makes a strong finish to the season.

"Players make their own decisions and they have to deal with the consequences of that and by 'consequences' I mean with the situation they are facing," Klinsmann said.

"Brek Shea badly, badly wanted to go to Stoke City and now he's not playing there, at all. He's not even in the [matchday squad] at all and he has to deal with that. He never really discussed it with us. I discussed it with [MLS vice president] Todd Durbin, but he badly, badly wanted that move. It is now what it is. It's not helping us if he's not in their first 18."

Shea is determined to make the £2.5 million deal work and still hopes to make an impact and add to his two appearances in the remaining games this season, but Pulis insists he signed the winger with the view to next season.

He has made just two substitute appearances since moving to the Britannia Stadium - at Fulham on February 23 and at home to West Ham the following week. Pulis has remained consistent in his claims he signed Shea with next season in mind, particularly as the 23-year-old had an operation on his foot at the start of November.

Shea signed a four four-and-a-half-year contract in January and he proved his fitness in a recent under-21 game against Manchester City. Stoke virtually assuring themselves of Premier League survival is likely to open up opportunities in the final three games of the season.

Stoke have confirmed they will play Houston Dynamo on July as part of their pre-season trip to the United States. The ten-day trip also includes a game against Shea's former club FC Dallas on July 27.
