Caldwell ready for Wigan recall
Wigan captain Gary Caldwell is ready to answer manager Roberto Martinez's defensive SOS as the Latics bid to beat the odds and earn a ninth successive season in the Premier League.
The FA Cup finalists are five points from safety with four games to go and are without three central defenders, with Maynor Figueroa joining Antolin Alcaraz and Ivan Ramis on the treatment table. It means Scotland international Caldwell, who has lost his place in the side this season, is almost certain to be recalled for Saturday's trip to West Bromwich Albion.
"All you can do when you're out of the team is keep working hard and being ready for when the opportunity arises again," he told the Wigan Evening Post. "Everyone in this squad has a massive role to play between now and the end of the season.
"Everyone has to be ready for when the gaffer decides it's right to go in, and that's definitely the case with me."
Caldwell is convinced that Wigan are capable of winning each of their four remaining matches and said the squad are confident they are capable of staying up.
"We're looking at every game between now and the end of the season as one we have to win, and we believe we can do that," he added.
"We've been down there and managed to get out of it for the last few years, and we're bracing ourselves for it going all the way again. It's in our hands, and we have to have a real belief that we can still get out of it."
