Fernandes: QPR in position of strength

Queens Park Rangers chairman Tony Fernandes has already sat down with manager Harry Redknapp and put in place a transfer policy for the summer following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

Fernandes believes QPR's defeats impacted him more than the players
Tony Fernandes and Harry Redknapp have discussed QPR's transfer plans

Redknapp committed his future to the club after a meeting on Monday morning, and the pair have set about deciding which of Rangers’ high-earning players they plan to keep in the Championship next season.

"We've been through who Harry wants to keep and who he is happy to let go," Fernandes told the club’s official website. "The transfer policy is in place now for next season and beyond.

"There are some that will want to stay, others that might want to move on. I am a positive person, so people will say I'm not being realistic, but if you go through player by player, we'll sort it out. It's not insurmountable.

"Every football club in England has players that the manager would rather was not there - that's a function of the game. I don't think we're going to be in a bad position from that. We'll come out of it okay."

On the future of Joey Barton, on loan at Marseille, he told QPR Player: "Marseille have got to put an offer in. Joey is under contract and Joey would be a very useful player for Queens Park Rangers. He helped Newcastle out [of the Championship]. Some would say we lacked his fighting spirit in the midfield.

"But if Joey and Marseille want [the transfer], then we will talk. However, he is a QPR player, and is contracted to QPR. That has to be a financial deal which would have to be worked out if he wants to go to Marseille, but as far as I am concerned he is a QPR player and in the summer will come back."

Since his arrival at Loftus Road in August 2011, Fernandes believes the quality of the QPR squad has gone up immeasurably, something that puts them in a strong position going into the transfer market.

"A lot of our investment has gone into building up the squad," he said. "Now we're in a position where we can trade. We weren't able to do that before - we were just buying, buying and buying.

"The policy was how long do we sign a player for and what kind of wages are we paying. That's all been cleared up now though.

"I think a lot has been made of us letting players from the Championship winning side leave the club, but if you go through all of those players who moved on that had contracts with us, none of them moved on to go and play in the Premier League. Some of them are playing in the bottom half of the Championship."

One player who faces an uncertain future at the club is Junior Hoilett.

Hoilett, 22, was coveted by a number of clubs last season before signing for Rangers under Mark Hughes. The Canadian has struggled for form in west London though, and was close to joining West Brom in January.

Although he doesn’t want to discuss where that move fell down he does say that he is keen to stay in the Premier League.

"I know what it sounds like, but I don't want to talk about it or anything to do with it," Hoilett told the Fulham Chronicle.

"Of course I want to stay in the top flight - every player does, but that's for the future after the last few games.

"It's been a tough time, there's no doubt. But all I can do is learn from the situation and come back stronger.

"Yeah, I would agree my form has dipped, but that's not entirely surprising given the circumstances - but you can't look back."
