Liverpool eye Reading's Pearce

Liverpool are interested in signing Reading defender Alex Pearce, according to reports in the Reading Post.

Pearce, 24, is out of contract at the end of the season and has not signed a new contract with the relegated Premier League side, despite holding talks with the club regarding his future.

- Keen: The impact of relegation - fatal or recoverable?

With Jamie Carragher’s impending retirement from football and doubts over the future of Sebastian Coates at Anfield, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is said to be seeking defensive reinforcements.

Having managed Pearce during his time as Reading manager, Rodgers remains a big admirer of a player he made his captain and the chance to take him on a free transfer would represent an economically sound deal.

Pearce has also been linked with West Brom but it appears he has not fully committed himself to a move from Reading yet.

The player’s agent told ESPN: “It's no secret the position Alex Pearce is in. Of course Premier league clubs are going to be interested in signing a 24-year-old international player for free. He has a lot of admirers.

“Pearce is important to Reading but they may struggle to convince him to stay and help them regain Premiership status.”
