Usmanov: Arsenal not ambitious enough

Arsenal's shareholder Alisher Usmanov has criticised the lack of ambition shown by fellow owner Stan Kroenke, claiming he "doesn't show any wish" to significantly strengthen the squad.

• Szczesny confident of top-four

Usmanov, who currently owns 30% of the club, has been critical of the Gunners' frugal transfer policy in the past. His latest comments suggest he is eager for Arsene Wenger to secure the services of a few "superstars" in the summer in order for Arsenal to compete for the title next term.

"The team has no superstars now," Usmanov is quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror.

The Uzbek also believes Kroenke "would probably be happy" with a fourth-placed finish this season.

However, in response to reports claiming Usmanov and Kroenke are prepared to sell their share, he said he "will think what to do with Arsenal" between now and the end of the season.

"In our understanding, Kroenke has no plans to sell his stake, but we also won't sell out, as we are the team's fans," Usmanov explained.

Meanwhile, chairman Peter Hill-Wood has dismissed any suggestion Arsenal are willing to let Wenger leave the club this summer, despite being linked to Paris Saint-Germain.

"I think this is complete nonsense - in fact, I know it is complete nonsense," he is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.

"That is news to me and I would certainly know if there was [a deal with another club]. He is happy as Larry and the whole thing is complete rubbish."
