APOEL coach Ivan Jovanovic resigns

NICOSIA, Cyprus -- The coach of newly crowned Cypriot champion APOEL Nicosia has resigned after guiding the club to its 22nd title this week.

A statement posted on the club's official website on Tuesday said the club deeply regretted Ivan Jovanovic's decision and wanted to him to stay on, but had to respect his wishes.

The board said Jovanovic's achievements with the club "greatly exceed what can be considered footballing success," after he led the team to four league titles in six years along with last year's remarkable run to the Champions League quarterfinals.

The club said that under Jovanovic's guidance, APOEL has earned a "prominent spot on Europe's football map."

The statement did not elaborate on the reasons that led the 50-year-old Jovanovic to leave the team.
