Sirigu condemned for role in PSG brawl

French right-wing political party the Front National has branded PSG goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu's behaviour "unacceptable" after his leading role in the mass brawl that followed Sunday's league win at Evian.

• Verratti agent calls for leniency
• Blog: Ill-discipline spoils win
• Leonardo: Referee lost his head

Sirigu, 26, faces up to an eight-game ban for his part in the violence and for refusing to return to the pitch to be shown a red card by referee Olivier Thual, who sent off PSG duo Marco Verratti and David Beckham, 38 during the Ligue 1 champions-elect's 1-0 triumph in Annecy.

"This attitude is unacceptable coming from a professional player who we can never emphasise enough has a duty, more than anyone else, to behave in an exemplary manner," Eric Domard, sports advisor to the Front National's leader, Marine Le Pen, wrote in a press release on Tuesday.

The comments were not well received by the French Football League (LFP), with the organisation's president Frederic Thiriez responding with a statement of his own.

"Thanks for the lesson, but on the subject of being exemplary, everyone must first take care of what's going on in their own backyard," Thierez said.

The Front National could learn, for example, that the sporting movement is autonomous from public bodies and that, above all, it is not to be used by any political party whatsoever."

Thierez confirmed that the incident would be handled exclusively by the LFP's Disciplinary Commission, which is due to sit on Thursday.

"There are commissions made up of independent, qualified people to judge disciplinary problems," he said. "In Sirigu's case, just as in any other, the LFP's Disciplinary Commission will give its verdict freely and with total independence."
