Luxemburgo suspended after brawl

Former Real Madrid manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo has been suspended for six matches after his involvement in a brawl during Gremio's Copa Libertadores match with Huachipato.

The sanction was made on Monday by CONMEBOL after the game on April 18, which ended in a 1-1 draw to confirm Gremio's progress to the last 16, was marred by ugly scenes as players and coaches clashed after the final whistle.

Luxemburgo will serve a six-match suspension for his part in the incident while he has also been fined $25,000. "In my opinion, the punishment was completely unfair," Luxemburgo said at a news conference.

The Brazilian was accused by coaches and players of Huachipato of initiating the scuffle, with Luxemburgo having allegedly told them to "enjoy their vacation" - but the former Brazil boss denies the claims.

Gremio assistant coach Emerson Ferreira da Rosa was also suspended for eight matches and fined $20,000 by CONMEBOL. The club have said they will appeal the sanctions.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
