Zingarevich sets sights on promotion

Reading owner Anton Zingarevich has said the club is financially sound despite relegation and vowed to give new manager Nigel Adkins the funds he needs to bolster the squad as they seek to return to the top flight at the first attempt.

• Madejski questions QPR
• Keen: Was relegation inevitable?

Having secured their promotion to the Premier League as champions last season, Reading must now prepare for life back in the Championship as the 0-0 draw with Queens Park Rangers on Sunday confirmed both clubs' relegation.

Unlike QPR, the Royals were conservative in the transfer market, and Zingarevich - who bought Reading from Sir John Madejski last year - feels that has left them in a good position.

"We are in a good place financially," Zingarevich told BBC Radio Berkshire. "The club was run in a prudent way before [he took charge] and that is how it will be run in the future.

"Obviously the new TV deal for the Premier League would have helped, but we will come back in 12 months. I don't want to think about what would have happened. We are focused on what we want to achieve in the next 12 months."

Adkins, who took charge of the club last month, will be given a transfer budget to achieve that aim, Zingarevich added.

"We need to give the manager all the tools he needs. We will sit down and discuss specifics and understand what his wishes are in terms of the current group.

"For me it's not the amount that needs to be spent but how you spend the money. We need to go out and sign the right players for us. It is like any investment."
