Fergie aiming to strengthen squad

Sir Alex Ferguson says Manchester United may spend big in the summer in order to strengthen their squad in the right areas.

Ferguson spent £24 million on Robin van Persie last year, with the striker playing a pivotal role in allowing United to reclaim the Premier League title.

Robert Lewandowski and Radamel Falcao remain on United's radar, and Ferguson admitted he would be willing to sign another big-name star in order to stay ahead of the chasing pack.

"I don't think we need to rebuild at all," explained Ferguson. "We possibly need two players. It depends. If a player came along who met our criteria we would push the boat out and get him, irrespective of how many players we have.

"Chelsea will definitely be involved next year. They have some good players and it looks likely (Jose) Mourinho will be going there."

After claiming his 13th league title, Ferguson has set his sights on eclipsing the Blues' Premier League record of 95 competition points. Sunday's clash with Arsenal could determine if that mark is feasible and Ferguson is determined to press for the milestone.

"I said last week I don't mind winning the league in the last game of the season," he said.

"Now we have won the league with four games left, I look at it as being one thing to win the league, another to do it by beating the record.

"Ninety-six points would be phenomenal. I don't know if that could ever be beaten."
