TORREON, Mexico -- Two-time defending champion Monterrey played to a scoreless draw at Mexican rival Santos Laguna on Wednesday night in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final.
Monterrey, facing Santos Laguna in the final for the second straight year, is in position to become the first team to win the regional tournament three straight times since Mexico's Cruz Azul in 1969-1971.
Monterrey forward Cesar Delgado was given a red card by referee Roberto Garcia Orozco for a dangerous tackle after he collided with Herculez Gomez in the 66th minute. The Argentinean will miss the return leg next week.
Santos forward Oribe Peralta was taken off the pitch in the 50th minute after colliding with Monterrey defense Leobardo Lopez and injuring his right leg.
The second leg is May 1 at Monterrey.
