Lille boss makes multi-lingual pledge

Rudi Garcia has tried to convince a sceptical French media that he will still be coach at Lille next season by telling them he is staying in four different languages.

Earlier this week, reports suggested that Lille officials had met both the outgoing Montpellier coach Rene Girard and Real Sociedad coach Philippe Montanier about the Grand Stade job.

It was believed the club were making contingency plans in case Garcia, 49, changed his mind after having said he would at least fulfil his contract, which expires in June 2014.

"I've talked about this often, but you haven't taken heed. I can tell you in several languages if you like," ex-Le Mans coach Garcia said before saying he was staying in French, English, Spanish and Italian. "We know Rudi Garcia will be at Lille next season. My president says the same thing as I do."

Midfielder Benoit Pedretti, 32, helped Garcia hammer home the message, saying: "He'll be our coach next season. He's told us, just as he's told you and president [Michel] Seydoux has told you. You have to believe us. Perhaps it'll have more weight if a player tells you rather than the coach."

On Thursday, L'Equipe reported that Montanier was set to extend his contract in San Sebastian beyond the summer, and the former Valenciennes coach contacted Garcia to offer assurances that he was not seeking to oust him.

"It's not true that they have met Girard and Montanier, and it's annoying to say so. Philippe Montanier called me to say that he had had no contact with Lille," Garcia explained.

However, he then added: "For Girard, I don't know anything about that."
