Jose: Ronaldo stay 'essential' for Madrid

Jose Mourinho has suggested Real Madrid “must do everything possible” to ensure that Cristiano Ronaldo stays at the Bernabeu.

Jose Mourinho: Friction with Ronaldo?
In just four years at the club, Cristiano Ronaldo has risen to sixth on the club's all-time leading scorer's list.

Madrid president Florentino Perez suggested on Sunday that club are set to offer Ronaldo an extension to his current contract, which ends in June 2015.

However no details of any new deal - or even negotiations with the player's agent Jorge Mendes - have emerged in the Spanish media.

Speaking to Portuguese channel TVI ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg at Borussia Dortmund, Mourinho said Madrid should do whatever it takes to keep Ronaldo at the club.

“For the club it would be fantastic, essential” Mourinho said. “When you have a player of these dimensions you must do everything possible not to lose him.”

Mourinho, another Mendes client, also advised his fellow countryman not to leave Madrid, but admitted that should he decide to go his current club would be unable to stop him.

“It is evident that he can play wherever he wants,” he said. “[But] it would be good for Real, and for him, if he stayed.”

Ronaldo’s infamous assertion last September that he was “sad”, and the club knew the reasons why, was widely viewed as evidence he wanted a 50% pay rise to around €15 million a year after tax. It has been suggested that Paris Saint-Germain or Manchester City would find it easier to reach that figure than Madrid, who are currently planning a new €250 million extension of their stadium.

The Portuguese attacker did say in January he would be happy to see out his current deal, but usually reacts with a smile and ‘no comment’ when pushed by reporters in mixed zones to discuss his future career plans.

Mourinho also alluded to financial issues at Tuesday's official UEFA press conference, in response to a question about whether reaching three consecutive Champions League semi-finals under his watch had been a success.

After six consecutive failures by Madrid to pass the last 16 of the competition before he arrived, the revenues secured by making the final four each year been important to the club, the former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss suggested.

“We have improved a lot in this, and also in the economic aspect,” he said. “We have helped a lot so that a club which lives from the income it receives has improved the money which it gets from the Champions League.”
