FIFA ExCo member resigns

CONMEBOL president Nicolas Leoz has resigned from his post with the South American governing body and the FIFA Executive Committee, citing health reasons.

Leoz has been in power in South America since 1986 and was instated on FIFA's ExCo 12 years later. However, the 86-year-old underwent his fourth heart operation last December, bringing him to the conclusion that it is best for him to step aside.

"I have invited you to this meeting to share with you my retirement from FIFA," Leoz told Reuters.

"I'm announcing my retirement from all FIFA commitees because it's important for my life.

"I still have good mental health but physically I'm often impeded. I feel very happy because I'm retiring with the tranquility and knowledge of having done a sincere and honest job."

The Paraguayan was named in the BBC programme Panorama, in which it is alleged Leoz took bribes from ISL during the 1990s pertaining to the award of contracts for the sale of television rights to the World Cup.

Leoz denied the accusation, but the findings of a FIFA investigation - initially due in March - are expected to be handed down as early as next week.
