Heynckes: Tactics worked 'brilliantly'

Jupp Heynckes has praised Bayern Munich's players for executing their tactics "brilliantly" during Tuesday's 4-0 rout over Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie.

A Thomas Muller brace and goals to Arjen Robben and Mario Gomez put Bayern in pole position to reach their second consecutive Champions League final, with the next leg at the Camp Nou seemingly a formality.

Bayern have scored four or more goals in their last four outings and Heynckes believes the Bavarian side's domination of this season's competition proves they are one of the most consistent teams in Europe.

"We have played extraordinary football all year," he told Sky Sport Germany. "The appetite for success is huge after the last two years.

"My team made our tactics work brilliantly. We ran and we fought, and that's down to our strength and class."

Heycnkes' men look on course to complete the treble, with the Bundesliga already won and their place in the DFB Pokal final already secured.

Midfielder Phillip Lahm claims he was unsurprised by the result given that Bayern targeted one of their opponents' few weaknesses in the air.

"Of course I can comprehend what happened. We have the potential to beat any team," said Lahm. "It's well-known that Barcelona have problems in the air. Defensively we were close to perfection, that was the key."

Franck Ribery admits his side may be on the back foot in the second leg but is confident of their Champions League title hopes.

"To get such a result, we knew we had to work together," Ribery said. "Apart from that, we knew we had a striker who could score. We're very happy. There is one game left but I think we performed well tonight."
