Taylor upbeat over Magpies' survival

Steven Taylor has said he is confident that Newcastle can secure their Premier League status soon.

The Magpies suffered their heaviest Tyne-Wear derby loss since 1979 as Sunderland won 3-0 last Sunday, but recovered some pride with a 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

• Duffy: Where's it going wrong?

The point gained at The Hawthorns put Newcastle six clear of the relegation zone, and Taylor told the Evening Chronicle: "Everybody needs to perform like that again.

"I don't think we'll go too far wrong. We just need to keep that in the team. We must give the fans what they deserve, and that's 100% commitment.

"You look at any Newcastle fan and you can see their hurt [after the Sunderland game]. It hurt everybody. Now we hope that West Brom has lifted everybody and we can get back to winning ways against Liverpool.

"You don't get many chances when you come to West Brom. We caused them some problems, and they found it difficult to break through. Their fans were getting frustrated."

Meanwhile, Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini is edging closer to a first-team return - but will not have recovered from injury in time to face Liverpool on Saturday.

"Colo will train on Thursday or Friday," Pardew told the Shields Gazette. "To have him around will be a boost."

He said he thought Cheik Tiote would have "a really good chance" of playing, but is waiting on news of the rib injur suffered by Papiss Cissé during the Europa League game against Benfica.

The forward, who has played through the pain of a cracked bone in the last two games, will see a specialist in France, who will decide whether or not he plays in the final four games of the season.
