Antonetti confirms Rennes exit

Frederic Antonetti has announced he will leave Rennes at the end of the season, though he has given no inkling as to his future plans.

With his contract expiring this summer, Antonetti had been tipped to quit the club he joined in 2009, and he has been linked with the coaching jobs at both Montpellier and Lille in recent days. There have also been suggestions the 51-year-old could take a sabbatical year.

"After four great years, my adventure with Rennes is coming to an end," Antonetti, whose mid-table side are on a nine-game winless run, including Saturday's Coupe de la Ligue final defeat to St Etienne, said in a statement on the club's official website.

"I've decided to leave the club, in part due to the disappointment caused by this difficult end to the season.

"I will nonetheless remember the many games in which we came so close to the success that has too often cruelly escaped us. Now, our duty is to not give up, and give everything on the pitch to end the season with our heads held high."

Ninth in his first season at the Stade de la Route de Lorient, Antonetti guided the team to back-to-back sixth-place finishes.

However, he has frequently made public his unhappiness with billionaire owner Francois Pinault's lack of investment in the team, which has been regularly plundered for its most valuable assets. He also lost his temper with media earlier this season, claiming his side were already punching above their weight given the financial policy in place at the club.
