Arsenal to appeal Giroud red

Arsenal have lodged an appeal to the Football Association against the red card shown to striker Olivier Giroud during Saturday's Premier League win at Fulham.

• Blog: Nervous work for Gunners

France international Giroud was sent off by referee Andre Marriner in the 90th minute of the 1-0 win at Craven Cottage for his challenge on Stanislav Manolev. The 26-year-old made contact with the ball first, but his foot continued over the ball and caught the Bulgarian.

After the match, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he accepted the decision, instead focusing on the severity of Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell's challenge on Mikel Arteta earlier in the same match, which also led to a red card.

However, Arsenal have now decided to contest the decision, which would see Giroud miss three of the Gunners' last four games of the season as they push for a top-four place.

A verdict from the FA's regulatory commission on Giroud - who has scored 11 league goals for Arsenal this term - is scheduled for Tuesday.
