Mandanda quashes Monaco link

Steve Mandanda has insisted he is not thinking about quitting the Stade Velodrome as he seeks to lead Marseille back into the Champions League, despite having been linked with a move away from the club.

Steve Mandanda feels some criticism has been unfair
Steve Mandanda says he is happy at Marseille

A number of sides have been suggested as potential destinations for Mandanda, but Ligue 2 champions-elect Monaco have been most closely linked with the goalkeeper. The French club see him as someone who could underpin their ambitions of re-establishing themselves as a major force.

The Marseille captain, however, has no designs on moving to the principality or, indeed, anywhere else.

"Honestly, [the link to Monaco] is not serious. Even if it were, I would say no. I'm good here now. I'm at a club which is moving forward and in which I feel good. The board have confidence in me, I've got great people around me, so it's not really a topic of discussion right now," Mandanda told Le Phoceen when asked about the speculation regarding his future.

"It's true that if I want to move forward, if I want to improve, it's to go to a bigger club than the one I'm at now. But now, you're asking yourself the question, I'm not doing that at all."

Criticised after making a number of errors earlier in the season, the former Le Havre man has hit a rich vein of form in recent weeks, extending his run of successive clean sheets to six with Saturday's 1-0 defeat of Brest.

Mandanda's displays have been key to Elie Baup's side easing ahead of Lyon and into second place in the Ligue 1 table.

But although he admitted their football may not always be spectacular, the Marseille No. 1 said the club's demanding fans should satisfy themselves with success and not focus on style as the side seeks a return to the Champions League.

"It's true that the fans might be frustrated by the quality of our play, but you mustn't forget we're second, that we win games," Mandanda, whose club have now registered 11 1-0 triumphs this season, said.

"As we've been on the podium throughout the season, it would be a real shame to not finish there. That's why the only thing that matters to me now is winning."
