Lambert hits out at Michu PFA omission

Rickie Lambert believes Michu's absence from the PFA Player of the Year shortlist is proof that the smaller clubs are overlooked for such awards.

• Player of the Year shortlist

Michu has had an impressive debut season for Swansea since signing for £2 million from Rayo Vallecano last summer, scoring 21 goals and inspiring the club to Capital One Cup success.

However, the striker was still overlooked for the Player of the Year award, with Manchester United pair Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick, Chelsea duo Juan Mata and Eden Hazard, Tottenham's Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez of Liverpool all being preferred.

Southampton striker Lambert says the omission is "shocking" and feels his peers - who voted - are biased towards the top flight's bigger clubs.

"It is shocking really if someone like Michu can't get in with the season he has had," Lambert told the Daily Mirror. "I don't know what it is, whether it is ourselves or the FA. But it is shocking that he is not in it.

"I did not believe it was because he's at an unfashionable side before this season but I'm starting to see it more and more."

Michu's Swansea team-mate Leon Britton echoed the comments of Lambert.

"We're a bit surprised. The players who are up for it are top players at top clubs, but it would have been nice to see a couple of our lads recognised for what they've done," he said.

"Michu especially because he's been fantastic and you wonder where we would have been without him."
