Klopp: Bundesliga becoming monopoly

Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp has said he fears the Bundesliga is on the verge of becoming a one-horse race like the Scottish Premier League following Rangers' demotion.

Klopp's comments came after Uli Hoeness said he feared the Bundesliga was heading towards 'Spanish proportions', meaning only two teams - Bayern and Borussia Dortmund - are able to win the title.

German Football League chief Christian Seifert echoed those concerns, saying he felt the wealth generated by the Champions League was harming the competitiveness of Germany's top league.

But Klopp said: "I fear 'Scottish proportions' more than 'Spanish proportions'. If Hoeness does not want 'Spanish proportions', maybe he should dispense with a few players rather than signing them."

Klopp said Dortmund, who won back-to-back titles before Bayern ran away with this season's crown, had to hope they "could get a piece of the cake".

And Schalke general manager Horst Heldt said: "FC Bayern have been dominating the league for years.

"I would not have a problem if FC Bayern said they would no longer be after young German talent. But if I proposed this plan, they would say: 'Heldt is nuts.'"

The Schalke chief executive, Clemens Tonnies, told Sport 1: "Looking at the spending power, FC Bayern are the clear No. 1, then it is Dortmund, and then us.

"I appreciate that Dortmund, after two great years, feel like they are No. 2, but they have to prove it in a sustained manner first."
