Boruc signs new deal

Artur Boruc has become the latest Southampton player to commit his long-term future to the club by signing a new two-year contract.

Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Morgan Schneiderlin, Jason Puncheon and Kelvin Davis have already penned deals with the Saints in recent months and Poland international Boruc, whose contract was due to expire in the summer, has followed suit.

“I am very happy and to be honest I am quite proud that I am part of the great ambitions of this club,” Boruc told the club's official website.

“I am looking forward to the next couple of months and couple of years hopefully. I am really pleased I am here. I enjoy playing in the Premier League and as a club I believe we can achieve a lot, to be honest. I am looking forward to it.”

Since the arrival of manager Mauricio Pochettino in January, Southampton have impressed with victories against Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool as they have all but secured their Premier League status.

Boruc believes the club can continue to build on the foundations the club has put in place for future success with Champions League qualification not out of the question.

“I don't think [Champions League is too big an ask],” he said. “We're playing Swansea this weekend and they show playing totally different football that you can achieve a lot.

“I think we are heading to this with our new manager. We are showing a lot of good work and I think the results we are getting are very good as well so, yeah, why not? You need to ambitious in your life to achieve your ambitions.

“You never know what is going to happen - it is a funny story with football. Everybody has great ambitions and you need to work hard to be in that position. I do believe that we can achieve it.”

Pochettino is delighted that Boruc will remain with the club, after making the goalkeeper his first-choice.

“I am very happy and he deserves it,” he said. “In the three months he has been here, he has been crucial for us. It is especially important for a goalkeeper to face the last games of the season with the confidence of the club, knowing he will be here for two more years. It suits his competitiveness.”
