Mexico still looking for win in 2013

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Mexico keeper Jesus Corona made four of his six saves in the second half to help preserve a 0-0 tie with Peru in an exhibition match Wednesday night.

The game drew a raucous, mostly pro-Mexico crowd of 46,288 that waved red, white and green flags and blew horns long before the match began at Candlestick Park. Fans unfurled a large replica of the Mexican team jersey that stretched over parts of three sections in the southern end of the stadium before introductions.

Not even the absence of four of Mexico's top players, including Javier Hernandez, dulled the pre-game celebrations.

The play on the field, however, didn't match the hype.

Mexico took just one shot on goal, a penalty kick by Angel Reyna in the 70th minute that keeper Jose Carvallo stopped. Carvallo barely moved to his right before dropping to his knees to make the save.

Without his top four players, Mexico coach Jose de la Torre had hoped to use the game as a platform for some of the team's lesser known players.

He used a roster made up of players solely from the Mexican League, a vastly different lineup than the one that tied the United States 0-0 in March. Left back Jorge Torres-Nilo was the only starter against Peru who also started against the U.S.

Instead, it was another disappointing result for Mexico, which has not been as impressive as expected in the final qualifying round for the 2014 World Cup.

Peru, ranked 32nd by FIFA, missed it best chance in the first half when Corona stopped Luis Advincula's header attempt in the 20th minute.

Mexico's Luis Montes took a long pass and dribbled around Carvallo after Carvallo tripped but his shot hit the right side of the net. Pablo Barrera's free kick from just outside the box later in the half sailed out of bounds.

Carvallo also stopped Angel Reyna's penalty kick in the 70th minute. Montes also missed a shot from inside the box in the 83rd minute.

Corona later made a save on a shot by Peru's Christofer Gonzalez to preserve the scoreless tie.

This was the second stop on Mexico's tour in the United States. The team played Denmark to a 1-1 tie in Phoenix on Jan. 30 and will face Nigeria on May 31 in Houston.
