Ancelotti: Elimination 'a disaster'

Paris Saint-Germain manager Carlo Ancelotti has described his side's Coupe de France exit at the hands of Evian Thonon Gaillard as "a disaster" and the "worst game" since he took over at the Parc de Princes.

• Blog: Defeat puts transfer talk in perspective

Javier Pastore's early goal was cancelled out shortly before halftime by Saber Khlifa who drew Evian level. Neither side could find a winner before the end of extra time and the hosts comfortably sealed their place in the semi-finals of the competition in a 4-1 penalty shootout win.

Only Ezequiel Lavezzi found the net from the spot for the visitors, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic missing his strike to send PSG out in the same stage they were eliminated last season.

Despite having the Ligue 1 title within reach, Ancelotti admits the Coupe de France was a priority and has apologised to the fans for sending an underprepared team into the match.

"This is a disaster. This is the worst game in my reign, the worst," Ancelotti told Canal + after the match.

"I'm sorry, I'm very sorry. It's my responsibility. Our attitude was not good enough. When a team goes on a field with a bad attitude, it's the fault of the coach."

The Italian insists he will go back to the drawing board ahead of Sunday's league match against Nice and has addressed his players about simple errors they made at Evian.

"This is a bitter disappointment, especially the attitude shown by the team. Anyone can lose a match of football, but we didn't have any character out on the pitch," he said. We missed a lot of passes.

"Sometimes this season, when the team was totally focused, we played some great matches of football, like against Barcelona. The season isn't over yet. Every match is difficult. The attitude of the Evian team was excellent. They deserve to qualify for the semi-finals."

Goalscorer Pastore disagreed with Ancelotti's assessment of the match, claiming there is still plenty to be salvaged from the season.

"This isn't a failure. We lost a match of football, that's all," Pastore said. "When we don't play well and our opponents defend well, that can happen.

"We are eliminated from the Coupe de France but there is still the championship up for grabs. Evian were a very good side this evening."
