Kehl commits to Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund captain Sebastian Kehl has signed a one-year contract extension with the club.

Dortmund's longest-serving player, whose original deal was set to expire this summer, is now tied down until 2014.

Despite having been linked with a move to the MLS in January, the midfielder, who signed for the club from Freiburg in January 2002, will play on into his 12th season at the Westfalenstadion.

Kehl was delighted with the news and says he is looking forward to achieving further success with last season's Bundesliga champions.

“BVB, our team, the fans and the city of Dortmund have long become a place to call home,” he said. “I am delighted to be part of this club until 2014 at least and to be able to continue to write the success story as the captain of the team.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Dortmund's general manager Michael Zorc.

"We are delighted to keep an important leader and role model at the club for one more year,” he said.

Kehl has made 273 Bundesliga appearances for both Freiburg and Dortmund during his career. Although he has faced tough competition for a place in midfield this season, competing with the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Sven Bender, Moritz Leitner and Nuri Sahin, he has started 17 league games.

Dortmund have now tied up most of their key players until at least 2016. However, Robert Lewandowski, contracted until 2014, is rumored to be leaving at the end of the season, while Ilkay Gundogan's deal expires in 2015.

Despite reported interest from clubs in Spain, the midfielder told SportBild on Wednesday that he has no plans to leave the club.

“I am 100% sure that I will still be with Dortmund next season,” Gundogan said, adding that he is likely to sign a new contract soon.
