Taylor out for most of next season

Newcastle defender Ryan Taylor will miss the majority of next season after suffering a reoccurrence of the cruciate knee ligament injury that has kept him out for much of this campaign.

The 28-year-old first picked up the injury during the Magpies' Europa League qualifier at home to Greek side Atromitos in August.

Forced to undergo surgery, Taylor returned back to training recently and had hopes of featuring in the first team before the season's end.

However, Newcastle confirmed on Wednesday via a statement on their official website that the former Wigan man has suffered a serious setback.

The statement read: "Newcastle United are sad to announce that Ryan Taylor has suffered a further cruciate knee injury. After making good progress over the past eight months and having just returned to training, this latest news is a massive blow to the popular player. It is likely that Taylor will miss the majority, if not all, of next season."

Those sentiments were echoed by manager Alan Pardew, who confirmed that Taylor will receive the continued support of the club.

A popular player amongst both his team-mates and fans, Pardew also commended the player's attitude during his last eight months of rehabilitation.

"Ryan has worked so hard and diligently since his injury," Pardew told the club's official website. "He has been a model patient and has given his all to ensure he could return to full training in the best condition possible. Clearly everyone at the club is deeply saddened by this news. Ryan has, and will continue to, receive the full support of everyone at Newcastle United during this difficult time for him."

The news follows that of the injury to Tim Krul, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season. Newcastle have confirmed that the goalkeeper will undergo surgery on the dislocated shoulder he suffered during Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland.

Pardew may now be forced to call upon youngster Jak Alnwick as he attempts to rectify his goalkeeping issues. The 19-year-old, a younger brother of former Tottenham goalkeeper Ben, is yet to have made a competitive appearance for the Magpies.
