Platt offers Aguero support

Manchester City first-team coach David Platt has insisted he will go into the trenches to defend Sergio Aguero with the striker having come under attack of late.

• Platt: We expected no charge

The Argentina international has been heavily criticised for his two-footed tackle on Chelsea's David Luiz during Sunday's FA Cup semi-final victory.

Platt said Aguero will apologise to the defender if he believes that is the correct thing to do, and in the meantime he has vowed to stand side by side with the former Atletico Madrid player.

"There are a lot of bullets being flown at Sergio, and I think, like me as an employee of Manchester City, he needs someone to stand with him in the trenches and face those bullets. That is where I am," Platt said.

"Sergio will do what Sergio thinks is right. I felt David Luiz spoke exceptionally well after the game, his words did not correlate to the headlines. I did not see him demanding any apology but there you go."

Aguero did not face any retrospective action from the FA because referee Chris Foy and his officials saw the incident and chose not to punish the striker at the time.

Despite calls for FA rules to be changed, Platt feels English football's governing body is right in its approach.

"If you want to analyse them on a Monday morning, you have to analyse the full 90 minutes of every game," he said. "In any given weekend, there will be several incidents where players would be retrospectively banned, be put in the stands and be castigated.

"The officials have a very, very difficult job. The game is played at a pace that is much, much quicker than it used to be. It is very difficult for people who haven't played the game to understand what is a mistimed tackle and what isn't. We shouldn't be refereeing games on a Monday morning."
