Wolves to recall Griffiths

Wolves are to recall striker Leigh Griffiths from a loan spell at Hibernian and take up an option to extend his contract by a further year.

Leigh Griffiths celebrates after putting Hibs into the lead against Celtic last month
Leigh Griffiths has failed to make an impact at Wolves since signing in January 2011

Griffiths, 22, has scored 25 goals this season and helped Hibs reached the Scottish Cup final where they will face Celtic on May 26. However, that will be his last game for the Scottish side who had hoped to sign him on a free transfer in the summer.

Molineux boss Dean Saunders has been impressed with the Scotland international’s form north of the border and plans to bring him back into the fold as he begins to plan his squad for next season.

He is quoted by the Scotsman as saying: “When he came back here after I had just taken over, I had to make a decision on what to do in a few days. I had to make a decision right then as the window was opening and closing and at the time he was about fifth-choice striker and I was looking to bring in someone new as well, so it was better for his career to have that loan extended.

“Otherwise he might have been sat here and played three games and not really got a chance. Hindsight is a great thing and if we had known what we know now, then we would have kept him. But I am looking forward to getting him back here in the summer for the start of pre-season

“I am really looking forward to working with him when he comes back. I have told him that if we could have got him back when Sylvan Ebanks-Blake broke his leg we would have, but when we extended his loan, we had to do it window to window.”

The player moved to Wolves from Dundee on a two-and-a-half year deal in January 2011 but joined Hibs on loan in August of that year.
