Toulalan agent talks up Atletico switch

Jeremy Toulalan’s agent has leant weight to increasing rumours that the midfielder will leave Malaga for Atletico Madrid in the summer.

Jeremy Toulalan has quietly gone about his business at Malaga
Jeremy Toulalan has been an integral player for Malaga since arriving from Lyon in 2011

The former France international joined Malaga for €10 million from Lyon in 2011. He was a driving force in Los Boquerones surprise run to this season’s Champions League quarter-finals, which came despite key men including Santi Cazorla and Nacho Monreal being sold during the season, and ended so dramatically at Borussia Dortmund last week.

The continuing uncertainty around Malaga’s finances, coupled with their ban from European competition next season, mean further big names could be sold this summer, and Toulalan’s agent Mickael Manuello has told L'Equipe that Atletico were among the clubs who had enquired about his client.

“Atletico Madrid are putting a lot of pressure on Jeremy,” Manuello said. “But it is also true that he has other concrete options.”

Toulalan, who turns 30 in September, is under contract until 2015 at La Rosaleda. This deal contains a €30 million release clause, although AS have claimed Malaga would do business for around half that figure.

Valencia have also been linked with a move, but would struggle to raise that type of cash, while Atletico are expected to strengthen in midfield this summer ahead of next season’s likely Champions League campaign.

The player himself has previously hinted that the Qatari-owned club’s financial woes could mean he leaves at some point, but has always been clear to stress how happy he is on the Costa del Sol.

"I do not know what the future will bring, but I enjoy being here,” Toulalan said in comments reported by El Desmarque Malaga in early April. “I would love to stay. I am happy here, it would be difficult to be happier than I am at Malaga.”
