Bayern chief calls for calendar change

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has called for the Bundesliga calendar to be overhauled in preparation for the soaring temperatures expected at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Although the German summer is much cooler than the soaring temperatures in the Middle East, it has been suggested that playing through the summer months will allow players to adapt for the tournament.

The possibility of moving the 2022 competition to the winter is also being considered, although having a longer break in January/February and extending the season into June and July - when the World Cup would be played - is a preferred method for Rummenigge to improve player welfare.

The Bayern chairman also believes the change would improve the quality of football by not playing through inclement conditions in winter.

"From May to August is when we do not play football in Germany, although these are the months with the best weather. A change could be an advantage to us," he told Die-Welt.

"The football family is united. Either pausing in January and February or in October and November, I can see in this model as an opportunity for the Bundesliga. We would prefer to pause when the weather is bad here."
