A construction worker at Arena Palestra has been crushed to death by a large concrete column following a landslide in the area.
The worker, who remains unnamed, was rushed to Santa Rose hospital while teams of firefighters helped evacuate other members of the construction team who were unscathed following the incident.
WTorre, the construction company responsible for the development confirmed there had been a landslide but was not in a position to make any further comment. It is the second football-related fatality in as many days following the shooting of two men walking to the Arena Castelao stadium in Fortaleza on Sunday.
Arena Palestra will be the new home of Brazilian Campeonato side Palmeiras and is not scheduled to host any World Cup 2014 fixtures.
