Gibson set for thigh operation

Everton midfielder Darron Gibson is likely to need a summer operation to rectify a thigh problem, manager David Moyes has revealed.

• Anichebe attitude hailed
• Moyes: Arsenal clash is vital

Gibson, 25, scored only his second goal for the club with the deflected opener as Queens Park Rangers were beaten 2-0 at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Saturday.

The 25-year-old has been a consistent performer since arriving from Manchester United in January 2012, but his progress has been held up by injuries.

He was ruled out for three months with a torn thigh muscle suffered during the early stages of a 2-0 defeat at West Brom on September 1. Although he returned in late November, the problem forced him to miss most of January as well.

Moyes said: "After the game on Saturday, I was asked about Darron Gibson's goal and his shot. I think he could do it more and with more ferocity as well because he's got a great shot on him.

"But he has got a bit of a problem at the top of his thigh which I think will need some form of operation at the end of the season."

Gibson's influence for Everton is demonstrated by the fact that they have lost only three of the 29 league games in which he has played for them.

Moyes added: "I think that what he's given us is that he's good on the ball. He's got a better range of passing than maybe some of the other midfielders we've got. He's a different type.

"He can score from a shot and we're hoping that he can do that more regularly. That was one of the main reasons for bringing him in - to start to try and get some more goals from midfield."
