Mandanda: Marseille just targeting second

Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda acknowledged that staying in second place is the extent of his side's ambitions for the remainder of the season after Sunday's goalless draw at Lille.

• Ligue 1: Marseille held

OM are now unbeaten in six matches, but although the draw keeps them clear in second with Lille five points back in sixth, the gap to leaders Paris Saint-Germain keeps on growing. The capital club, who defeated Troyes on Saturday, are now nine points clear at the top and are closing in on the title.

"It was important not to lose against Lille because they are a good side and are trying to catch up with us in the table," Mandanda told Le Parisien after the match.

"There are still six games to go and the objective is to consolidate second place - Paris are nine points ahead, so it will be difficult to catch them now."

Elie Baup's side have made a habit of grinding out results as they seek a return to the Champions League next season.

They are struggling to put the ball in the net but have gone five matches without conceding a goal after a heroic display by Mandanda in the far north of France, with the France international pulling off half a dozen outstanding saves to keep Lille at bay.

"It was one of these nights where you just feel unbeatable," he said, while Baup hailed his captain for shutting out opponents who had put five past Lorient last weekend.

"I said before the match that he was the best 'keeper in Ligue 1 and he proved it," Baup said. "He was extraordinary. Lille had lots of chances, but thanks to the defensive effort put in by our goalkeeper and the team as a whole, we managed to get a point that keeps us on the podium."
