Scott's popular acclaimed worldwide

Adam Scott's curse-breaking Masters triumph captured worldwide attention, with Twitter going into meltdown as global sporting stars and celebrities rushed to issue their congratulations.

Hailed as one of the most popular Masters victories in years, everyone from billionaire Donald Trump to surfing legend Kelly Slater, tennis greats Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert and pop sensations One Direction expressed their delight.

No one, though, was more thrilled than Scott's idol Greg Norman, to whom the 32-year-old fellow Queenslander partly dedicated his breakthrough victory.

"I have been a huge believer in Adam and I am so proud of him, as is the rest of Australia," Norman said after Scott prevailed in a tense sudden-death playoff against Argentine Angel Cabrera.

"#Adam Scott!!!!! #MastersChamp!!! Love you, buddy. Congratulations. Way overdue ..." Slater tweeted.

Just as he had after manfully facing the world's golfing media to explain his shattering British Open collapse last July at Royal Lytham, Scott received a standing ovation following his press conference at Augusta National.

"You showed great courage Adam ... and resiliency from last year's disappointment at Lytham," said American great Tom Watson.

Scott famously dated Serbia glamour girl and former world No.1 Ana Ivanovic and he had no shortage of support from the tennis world.

"This was Scott's time ... I am happy for him. That is a big monkey off his back," said Navratilova.

"Adam Scott!! A million girls just fell in love." - gushed Jessica Korda, reigning Australian Open women's golf champion and daughter of former Australian Open tennis champion Petr Korda.

One congratulatory message from One Direction teenager Niall Horan was retweeted worldwide more than 12,000 times before midday in Australia.

"Yeaaahhhh Adam Scott ya legend! Doin it for the Aussies!" Horan said.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard also offered her congratulations to Australia's historic first Masters champion, as did Socceroos captain Lucas Neill, former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash, a swag of rugby league and rugby union players and Formula One star Mark Webber.

"Amazing viewing at Augusta. Adam Scott has given us a great Aussie sporting moment. Congrats, you are a legend!! #Masters," Neill said.

Even disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong and US motor racing legend Mario Andretti chipped in.

"Incredible final to the #Masters. Congrats Adam Scott. And congrats to Australia for your first ever win at Augusta," Armstrong tweeted.

Then, of course, there was, the world's golfing community, led by his jubilant Australian peers.

Geoff Ogilvy, the 2006 US Open champion but no longer Australia's most recent major winner, said it was "time for a beer".

But Robert Allenby went one better.

"Just had a bottle of 95 Grange in honor of Scotty," Allenby said.

Recovering from leukaemia, fellow pro Jarrod Lyle tweeted `you f*****g beauty Scotty", while former US major winners Steve Elkington and Wayne Grady also rejoiced.

"Waltzing Matilda ... Waltzing Matilda ..you'll go a waltzing Matilda with me.....#adamscott," Elkington tweeted.

Fellow Queenslander Grady simply said: "It's done. Great effort Scotty. Couldn't be happier."
