Marseille draw allows Lyon to close gap

Lyon took advantage of rivals Marseille and Saint Etienne dropping points this weekend to move up to third place and within two points of l'OM in the race for automatic Champions League qualification.

• Ligue 1: Saturday round-up

Lyon claimed a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Toulouse at the Stade de Gerland.

Les Gones closed the gap on second-placed Marseille thanks to goals from Clement Grenier, Bakary Kone and Bafetimbi Gomis.

Toulouse's Wissam Ben Yedder levelled the score midway through the first half but defeat for the Haute-Garonne club all but ended any slim remaining chance of European qualification.

Lille and Marseille had to settle for a goalless draw at the Grande Stade Lille Metropole as the visitors had goalkeeper Steve Mandanda to thank for securing a valuable point.

The visitors made a promising start and had an early penalty claim turned down when Andre Ayew went down under a Franck Beria challenge but referee Wilfried Bien waved play on.

Nice claimed a comfortable 3-0 victory over lowly Sochaux at the Stade du Ray.

Second-half goals from Mahamane Traore, Didier Digard and Dario Cvitanich were enough to secure the hosts a vital three points in their hunt for a Champions League place.

Defeat for Sochaux left them teetering precariously just above the bottom three with just six games left, while they have only one victory in their previous eight matches.
