Kompany delighted to secure final berth

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany was left proud of his team-mates efforts as they beat Chelsea to book a place in next month's FA Cup final against Wigan.

• City, Chelsea put on great show
• Brewin: Mancini closes on Cup
• Curtis: Football redeems itself

Goals from Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero secured a 2-1 victory at Wembley, and Kompany is relishing the prospect of finishing a third straight campaign with silverware.

"It is brilliant,'' defender Kompany told ITV. "It is another great day for the club. You look at this (atmosphere) and we only hope we can have these scenes when we play against Wigan in the final.

"We never doubted the fact that we wanted to win trophies. This was an important game and it will be an even more important game in the final against Wigan. That is what we are looking forward to now.''

It could have been quite different, though, had a penalty been awarded for a late Kompany challenge on substitute Fernando Torres.

"I thought it was great defending,'' the Belgium international said. "I put my body in the way and did everything I could. This is football and it was a well-fought game and it was not easy for both teams.

"For a while it was too comfortable and it was a wake-up call (when it went to 2-1). The pitch is huge and a lot of the time it is you against your man. You never know what can happen but I think in the end we did really well and when it mattered we were there.''

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez, though, could not disagree more with the City skipper.

Asked if he thought it should have been a penalty, he said: "Yes, clearly. It is very clear. You can see the pictures. It is very clear. We had two situations in the second half that are difficult to explain but we are playing against a very good team so if they scored another the game would have been over.

"But we had very good chances to score and could have been back in the game. These two decisions were the big difference.''

That other decision was a nasty Aguero challenge on David Luiz, with the Argentinian fortunate to avoid a red card.

"See the video,'' Benitez added. "I will not talk about players, but for me the penalty decision was crucial.''

Chelsea were thwarted a number of times by stand-in City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon and Roberto Mancini has indicated that he will stick with the Romanian for the final having fielded him in every FA Cup match this season.

Mancini said: "Costel did very well. He is a good keeper and he deserves this situation because he has been here for two years and has done very well behind Joe Hart.

"It is a good situation for Joe too. We have for weeks to the final but I think it will be this (Pantilimon playing).''
