Violence breaks out after derby

Police and football supporters clashed in Newcastle city centre on Sunday in the aftermath of Sunderland's Tyne-Wear derby victory at St James' Park.

The Wearsiders claimed a 3-0 victory but there were violent scenes following the end of the match, with police having bricks, rocks and flash bangs thrown at them by angry fans.

Sunderland supporters were also attacked with missiles, and wheelie bins were set alight, as the travelling faithful's police escort to the train station was targeted.

A police officer at the scene told the Northern Echo that the scenes were "the worst rioting I have seen in the city centre for decades", while a shocked shopper added: "It was terrifying and complete chaos. The fans were chucking flares, bits of pavement, rocks, anything they could get their hands on."

Northumbria Police made reference to the trouble on its official Twitter account.

One tweet read: "There have been pockets of disorder involving NUFC in Newcastle city centre, no major disruption, officers are on scene and dealing.''

Another message said: "CCTV and evidence is being gathered and action will be taken against anyone involved in these sporadic incidents in Newcastle derby.''
