Olimpia cruise to next round
Paraguayan side Olimpia won Copa Libertadores Group Seven in style with a 4-1 win over Newell's Old Boys - who also advanced to the last 16 despite the hammering.
Even the three-goal margin left Newell's with a goal difference of plus-one, three better than Universidad de Chile who moved level on points by beating Deportivo Lara.
After Victor Figueroa's glaring miss for Newell's, Olimpia took the lead on the half-hour when Juan Manuel Salgueiro scored from the penalty spot after goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman was sent off for bringing down Sergio Ariosa.
Paulo Cruzado set up an equaliser for Milton Casco but half-time substitute Juan Ferreyra restored Olimpia's lead and both he and, first, Salgueiro added their second of the match.
Salgueiro said afterwards: "We were already qualified but our aim was to secure first place. They were tough opponents but we managed to control them and end with a comfortable score.''
Universidad, meanwhile, were 3-2 winners against Venezuelan side Lara.
The two teams traded goals in first-half stoppage time, defender Renato Civelli heading Universidad in front before Jose Torrealba equalised.
Isaac Diaz restored the lead four minutes after half-time and Cesar Cortes' strike with 12 minutes to go raised hopes of an unlikely goal difference swing, but Zamir Valoyes pulled Lara back within one goal to nip their hopes in the bud.
In Group Two, Palmeiras reached the knock-out stages with a 1-0 win over Libertad despite the dismissal of Wesley.
The forward received his second yellow card shortly before the hour mark for a foul from behind on Nelson Romero.
But his side already led, after midfielder Charles took advantage of a defensive error, and they held on to their advantage to top the group on nine points with one game to go.
Libertad and Tigre, respectively one point and three behind the Brazilians, meet next week with the second qualifying place on the line, while Sporting Cristal prop up the group on five points.
