Germany considers summer football

The German Football League (DFL) is discussing plans to play through the summer and have a long break in the winter if the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is held during the winter months.

DFL general manager Andreas Rettig said the idea was being considered, with the news coming after Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had suggested the idea in an interview with Die Welt earlier this week.

"From May through to August we don't play football here, even though we have the best weather in those months," Rummenigge said. "Maybe we should have our break when the weather is bad."

And Rettig told the paper: "We are openly discussing this issue. "In the end, of course, it is down to FIFA and what they decide in the ongoing Qatar debate."

Other Bundesliga officials backed the idea, with Werder Bremen's Thomas Schaaf saying: "We have the best conditions during the summer. We have to make use of it."

Hannover 96 president Martin Kind told Bild: "The winter is not that thrilling for fans. It is more relaxed during the summer."

But Dortmund CEO Aki Watzke said: "You'd also have to keep in mind that it is different in the more southern countries in Europe. The Italians or Spaniards would most certainly not like to play during the summer when they have temperatures of 45C."
